The Night Before Heavyweight

Hi again! I told myself I would try to write a post a month, but I’ve had a busy couple of months at my day job, and I decided to prioritize development feature work for XIV in the Shell when I’ve had the free time to work on it. With less than 10 hours until Arcadion Heavyweight (Savage) goes live, I thought I’d throw together this quick little post just to check in.

Since my last blog, we’ve added two new features: FFLogs import, and an improved marker preset UI. If you haven’t gotten the chance to mess around with them already, the new tier of Savage raids will be the perfect opportunity to do so. Speaking of Savage…

In the next couple of weeks, there are two new features you can expect to show up:

  1. A user manual Though we do our best to make site controls as self-evident as possible, there are some pieces of information that are just easier to convey through really long blocks of text. To that end, I have a 30-page Google document ready that covers the full breadth of XIV in the Shell’s features, including some shortcuts and advanced functionality that you might not know about. In the days to come after Savage, I’ll be porting this manual (and its Chinese translation) to a permanent page on the site.

  2. Multi-target selection. XIV in the Shell has supported AoE calculations since the middle of patch 7.1, but until now, did not allow distinguishing between specific targets. That’s all about to change soon, and you can try out our new target selection capabilities on our beta site now!

A sample BLM rotation with targeting split across two bosses.

There are still many limitations and UI improvements to work out with this feature, so it may be some time before this makes it onto the main site. Notably, damaging debuffs such as RPR’s Death’s Design, SCH’s Chain Stratagem, and NIN’s Dokumori/Kunai’s Bane don’t yet calculate potency boosts correctly. That said, if, hypothetically, you just wanted to figure out how best to keep DoT uptime in a 2-target Savage encounter where bosses are stacked and split at different times based on mechanics…

Tracks for Heavyweight will also be available in the first few weeks of the tier. Once all this planned work is done, I’ll be taking a break from active feature development to focus on other priorities, both in-game and in real life. You can still expect bug fixes and minor improvements, but for the most part I’m happy with how far our tool has come in the year since BLM and PCT in the Shell merged into the site you see today.

Anyway, thank you all for reading, and thank you for continuing to use XIV in the Shell. Good luck to everyone raiding in the new tier! If you’re not raiding, well, good luck to you anyway! I’m sure you can find somewhere to use it.
